Chinese Seafood Safety, A Fishy UPDATE!:
-To: The China Syndrome: Bargain Basement Price = Tainted Love Now it’s sewage & pollution-fighting but definitely-Banned carcinogenic antifungals found in imported seafood.
Specifically: Catfish, Eel, Tilapia, Shrimp, Basa, Dace Carp & Clams in the 18% of our total Fish imports that come from China.
Okay, okay, okay! -Turns out it was Leucomalachite Green, Gentian Violet & Pals and NOT the old standby “Soylent Green”
As far as improving the future of Asian seafood safety:
It’s Important to note: Vice-General Manager Wei Shouzhu sez, “We can bypass evade flout flummox prevaricate hornswaggle and generally bone meet any U.S. standard ,because we have pricing power and US producers don’t.”
Seriously, though the real problems of-course come from the fact that the largest & probably-most-influential single exporter of fish & seafood to the US is China as you may have guessed.
As the lowest-cost provider, Oversight & Inspection isn’t as really good as it should be.
Many operations are small and in developing-areas where many types of health-standards aren’t nearly as high as a normal consumer might like.
-And for seafood safety that poses a huge problem, especially given the economic-might of Asia & China.
