SnackWell Ninjas+Glucose Grenades+Corn-spiracies==NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!
Mad King Dr. David Ludwig and his team of Insulin-Warriors published a study on diet results for macronutrient types in the JAMA that challenges a few inaccuracies and throws a +/-surprise or two.
They took a group of 21 obese individuals, brought them down about 30 pounds, and then promptly chained them to old radiators, wearing nothing but their underpants. THE END.
No, really; The only way the test subjects were allowed to escape was to follow strict diet plans based on 3 popular approaches to weight-loss.
Low-Carb, Slow (or Low-Glycemic-Index) -Carbs, and Low-Fat.
The most interesting thing the team found out was not which diet showed the most weight-loss. -Partly because the handcuffs were not retightened and those inmates escaped. Damn!
No; -the really interesting part was, -the one we’ll leave for later.
Now if you’re a regular reader here, you’re probably brilliant and know all this already.
-But just for sake of thoroughness:
The Low-Carb Diet showed the Highest Weight-Loss and the Biggest Increase in Metabolism. (mad though this seems, as I’m sure the calorie formula was the same for all, eh?)
In Second Place, came the Slow-Carb Diet, at 1/2 of the Metabolism Increase as the Low-Carb.
And Lastly, the Low-Fat Diet came in Third, with truly horrible results.
*And NOW, the Interesting Bit (the bit you already knew):
OK, OK! HERE:
In terms of long-term, permanent changes,
The Slow-Carb Diet was the best of all three.
Subjects didn’t lose weight as quickly as the Low-Carb,
BUT they didn’t have as much Chronic Inflammation as the Low-Carbers,
and nowhere near the Two-Front-War of Heart-Risk/Diabetes-Risk/Deathsprial-Fandango currently referred-to as ‘Metabolic Syndrome’.

- A good call-in on that subject with another diet not-studied,
- and Aner Tal’s study-based caution about what to watch for when you’re really hungry.
-Especially since it ties into the bigger problem that Insulin-Warrior Ludwig and his team are after.
+And on that note,
Homework:
Next time you’re in a supermarket looking to maximize carb-quality, have a look at the Calorie Counts on Vermont Bread’s Soft Whole Wheat (not the organic, the regular).
-Now Compare that to the Calorie Count on most other brand Whole Wheat breads.
-Where does that extra 50 calories in the non-Vermont come from?
-I’ll give you one guess…
PS: No matter what the study seems to imply about the danger you smarties already understand about Fast-Carb-Insulin-Grenades,
Don’t think for ONE SECOND that getting EXACTLY the right amount of Calories for your weight, age, gender and activity-level isn’t The Absolute Key to losing weight.
It is.
